The Back-to-School Transition: Helping Kids Survive the Shift

The Back-to-School Transition: Helping Kids Survive the Shift

I learned as a young mom that it takes about two weeks to transition to something new.  New foods, new schedules, new places, new people, new habits.

And until the transition is made, there can be some tough times.  A few tantrums, sadness, stress, sleeplessness.

That back-to-school transition is a big one for many families.  Everything changes, and those changes can be anxiety-inducing for both parents and kids.  Will they like their new teacher?  Will they make friends?  Will that bully from last year leave them alone?  Will they catch the bus on time?  Here comes the avalanche of papers!  Here comes the homework struggle!  Here comes the morning rush!

We could all stand an opportunity to decompress, take a chill pill, calm our minds.  Most especially kids making that back-to-school shift.  And coloring is a great way to do that.

A mother and her three children are gathered around a wooden table, coloring a large map with colored pencils. Several colorful backpacks are resting on the chairs, and the scene is set in a cozy living room with a stone fireplace in the background.

Did you know that Coloring:

  • calms the brain's stress response;
  • reduces stress and anxiety;
  • detoxifies digital overload;
  • improves focus and concentration;
  • gives an opportunity to naturally engage in mindfulness;
  • teaches patience;
  • boosts confidence;
  • improves focus and concentration;
  • helps develop problem-solving skills;
  • improves hand-eye coordination and fine-motor development;
  • helps with handwriting skills;
  • gives color and shape recognition practice;
  • nurtures no-pressure creative thinking.

That's a lot of good reasons to offer coloring in your children's after-school routine!

For young scholars needing to decompress after school--especially during those first weeks of transition, I highly recommend:
