National Book Month?!?  Did I read that right?  

There's a whole month that celebrates books and reading and literacy and authors?

Yes, yes there is.

We love books in our house.  Perhaps too much!  So many books, so little time to read them all.  In her popular book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, Marie Kondo suggests owning no more than 30 books.  And us book-o-philes reply, "You mean on our nightstand, right?  Right?!?"

Personally, I love to read just about anything.

Fantasy, history, poetry, fiction or non-fiction.  It's a simple pleasure in life to sit in an overstuffed chair with a cup of lemon tea steaming on the table beside me, a book open in my lap.  

Historically, it's actually a rare privilege to be able to enjoy a book.  Books have only been available to the general public for a few hundred years.  Not many generations ago, our ancestors were most likely illiterate.  Books would have been something the local priest owned, or the wealthy landowner had in his home.  Our ancestors' experiences with stories was quite different from ours.

Even now, with books readily available and relatively cheap, it's a surprising fact (at least to those of us who would not be caught dead without books in our house) that books aren't popular with everyone.

In the United States, about 21% of citizens are functionally illiterate, and 54% read below a 6th Grade level.  

According to YouGov.com, 40% of American adults don't read books at all, while the top 19% of readers consume so many books that they rocket the average number of books read per adult to 8!  

What?!?  40% of us don't read at all?  

That's just CRAZY talk!
