Coloring and Mindfulness
What is Mindfulness?
In the broader context, it's merely awareness or attentiveness.
Psychologically, the practice of Mindfulness has become something of a breakthrough.
Mindfulness is nothing new. Buddhist and Hindu monks have been practicing it for centuries. It's the idea that we can actively and openly become aware of the present moment, without judgment. It's observing the now in a compassionate mindset.
It's super relaxing, too. Try it!
Sit in a relaxed position. (No, you don't have to assume the Lotus position. Just a comfortable chair will do.)
Breathe comfortably. Pay attention to your breath and how it feels as it moves in and out of your body.
Now, as you continue to breath, close your eyes and listen. Make mental note of every sound you hear.
You will inevitably experience distractions--either externally or within your own internal thoughts. Take a moment to recognize each distraction, without judgement towards the distraction or towards yourself, and return to listening.
Continue for 10 to 15 minutes. Return your attention to your breathing. Breath a few times, feeling the sensations of motion and airflow. Open your eyes.
Those who seriously practice Mindfulness apply it in everything they do.
In the shower? The sound of the water, the feel of the soap, the smell of the shampoo. It's something we do so often, that we mentally disregard the beauty of those simple things.
Having a hamburger? The colors and textures of the bread, the lettuce, the cheese. The smell of the beef. The juicy drip of the tomato slice. The taste and texture of each bite, slowly observed--and enjoyed--as you pay attention to the sensations of eating. That sour crunch of the pickle, the cool tang of the ketchup, the rough saltiness of the beef.
To someone who is mindful, every moment is experienced and observed and embraced with openness and compassion. Mindfulness awakens our awareness of the present and eases the penchant to dwell on the negative events of the past and troublesome worries about the future. It can help us avoid self-criticism and manage difficult emotions.
